Prior to the commencement of Open Week we had our latest instalment of the ABP with prizes upgraded to encompass the top 3. The winner this week was Aidan Ahearn with 40pts. Coming close behind was Patrick Regan with 39. Third went to Gary Burke with 38pts.
On to Open Week with our prestigious Scratch Cups running over 3 days, drawing a large crowd from inside and outside the club. Winner of the prestigious Senior Scratch Cup was Pat Fitzpatrick with an impressive 72gross. Well done Pat very good scoring. The Junior Scratch was a very tight affair with the top scorers all divided by only a few shots. When the cards were checked it produced the local favourite Captain Paul Eivers continuing his excellent form by landing the victory with a 72gross. Second was PJ Bunyan with 74gross and first nett was James McNamara with 68nett. Onto the intermediate Scratch Cup and again the standard was high with top spot claimed by John Hughes scoring 78gross. Second place was George Murray with 79gross. First nett was Donal McCarthy with 66nett. Finally, the Minor Scratch Cup was won by Thomas Regan with an excellent 87gross. Coming home in 2nd place was Kenneth Hussey with 89gross and first, nett was Arthur O’Donnell with 71nett. Fantastic scoring by everyone in all categories and a great turn out.

We played Carlow in the quarter finals of Diageo Cup on Saturday. We had two pairings at home, Francis Mc Carthy and Breda Keating and the dapper Eamon Williams and Julie Connolly. In Carlow we had John McGrath and Kathleen Lonergan, Paul Tuohy and Caroline Maher, Vincent Bradshaw and Joanne Quaid. After the first nine, we were in a strong position, up in three matches, level in one and down in one. Carlow felt under pressure. Joanne hit a drive on the second that almost reached the green. Vincent was pleased and her opposition knew they had a tough match ahead. Paul and Caroline played together for the first time and the pairing worked well. They never went down at any point. They were the first pairing to win. Similarly, Francis and Breda who won on 16th in Cahir were always on top. Kathleen and John played great golf. Carlow is a tough championship course and our team rose to the challenges presented. Kathleen had a chip on the 17th, from the rough that rose high in the air, dropped on to the side of the green. The spectators gasped and then watched the roll down to within a few feet of the hole. It was like the shots you see constantly replayed on Sky Sports. We went as far as the 18th in both venues. We lost 3/2.
Sadly this was our last fixture. We had some new players this year who enjoyed the opportunities and will be keen to participate again next year.

Hole In One
Well done to Margaret Costello who aced the 9th hole on June 27th. She was playing in an 18 hole stableford competition with Phil Kehoe and Catherine MacMahon when she hit the perfect shot. Margaret is the ladies Treasurer and organiser of our weekly senior ladies group.
Last week our senior ladies played a 9 hole qualifying competition and the course was in great shape. Margaret Costello came 1st followed by Geraldine Cooney in 2nd. Our competitions continue every Monday.
Monday Mixed – July 1st
A big thank you to Ann Corbett for sponsoring last week’s competition. Once again a large number took to the course for our Monday mixed competition. Brian McNally, Cathy O Gorman and Margaret Gill went home with first prize. Three points back and in second place were Luke Healy, Rosemary O Donnell and Linda Harris. Scoring was very tight and after the cards were checked, Keith McGuire, Catherine English and Jo Doyle emerged in third place.
