Joseph Vincent Foley R.I.P.

It was with deep sadness we learned of the death of Joe Foley, Captain of Cahir Park Golf Club in 1971.

Joe was from Portlaoise, worked in the U.K. and on returning to Ireland,  identified Cahir as a good location for his enterprise, a furniture and carpet shop.  Located in the Mill, now known to us all as the Granary, Joe enjoyed many adventures within the business and outside.

Joe was one of the earliest members of the Golf Club.  He had a great friendship with Colm Flynn, R.I.P. and succeeded Colm as the third Captain in the fourth year of the Club.

Joe was very responsible for the extension built onto the original Clubhouse, the Nissen Hut.  He asked every member of the time to buy a Brick for ten shillings and many members purchased a brick every week until enough funds were raised to complete the build.  Joe was a good Golfer and enjoyed a wonderful social life in the Golf Club and in the town of Cahir.  His party piece was ‘Pearly Shells’, an old Hawaiian song, recorded by the late Burl Ives.

Joe left Cahir in the 1970s for Mallow and though he did not continue playing golf, he was a social member of the local Golf club.

Sincere sympathy is extended to his family on the loss of the Man they described as larger than life with a very friendly personality.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.

“The Course is Open”

It was great to hear these words after days of rain and hard frost.  Declan and Team managed the Course well and everyone who played this weekend appreciated their work.

The Driving Range and the covered Bays are open throughout the day irrespective of weather, so opportunity for all Golfers to practice for the busy season ahead.

Mens Result

We held a 9 hole open singles stableford over the 21st and 22nd of January.  Shay Hughes secured category one with 16 points playing off 3 with a domestic cut. Category two went to Vincent Bradshaw who shot 20 points playing off 7 (CB). Declan Lonergan won Category 3 with 24 points playing off 20 and rounding off the prizes category 4 was won by Tom Whitford with 19 points playing off 23 (CB). Congrats to all the winners.

Find the Golf Ball

With play resumed, all Members are asked to support the ‘Find the Golf Ball’ weekly Fundraiser.   Envelopes are available in the Clubhouse and in the Pro Shop.   Your weekly €2 is very valuable to build funds for continuous improvement of golf facilities and equipment. The envelope drawn on Saturday 21st of January was Luke and Cian Maher and their number was 15. It was not a winner but they still receive €20. The next draw will take place on  Saturday 28th of January.
